Just 10 mins before coming upstairs to check the blogasphere, I finished watching Jeremy Paxton's programme on tv, The Victorians. Would you believe that tonight's episode was about the booming cities, esp Manchester. And which building said it best in Manchester - the town hall of course.
He didn't say what Ford Madox Brown's 12 murals were specifically about; only that he had selected the hot themes for Victorian Manchester. And did it impressively.
They are rather odd in subject matter, several having nothing to do with Manchester or twisting history a bit. Still they are magnificant - and unlike the Oxfod ones have lasted.
I liked the Paxman book and video but it was generally panned over here - in summary Paxman does the Victorians.
