I heard that Mae West once gave an interview to journalists and while she answered their questions, very slowly, she undid the buttons at her cuff and they were all affected and riveted.
I'm wondering if the sitter had a similar intention in choice of slightly not-done-up style of her dress at cuff and neck. At first it looks modest . . . then one is not quite so sure sure.

Actually that is a fair comparison, as she was considered racy and the It girl of her day.
