Poynter painted an earlier view of the Grand Canal and the church of Santa Maria della Salute in 1863 (Victoria and Albert Museum). The present picture was owned by Charles Alfred Temple, a noted connoisseur and expert on the works of Turner, who also owned Rossetti's The Loving Cup, Millais' The White Cockade and The Temptation of Eve by Stanhope.
