Dante Gabriel Rossetti - Study for The Girlhood of Mary Virgin

pencil; black and brown ink and brown wash; heightened with white and gold

9.5 x 4 3/4"

An important picture. A study for Rossetti's first major oil and the first PRB work to be displayed in 1849 at the Free Exhibition (Hyde Park Corner) and the first time the initials P.R.B. were used. The study shows the Virgin under instruction from her Mother St. Anne. The figure to the right is probably St. Elizabeth. The virgin was modelled on his sister Christina and the older figure on his Mother.

The study is different to the oil. It was done about 1848.
