Marianne Stokes nee Preindeslberger
Born 1855 in Austria. She attended the local art academy and won a prixe enabling her to study in Munich under von Lindenschmidt. She also studied in Paris and tuirned professional and her works were shown in Paris and at the RA (1885 onwards). Painting in Brittany in 1883 she met the British artist Adrian Stokes and they married a year later. They settled in St Ives from where she exhibited regularly at various galleries. In 1893 she was awarded a medal at the Chicago World Fair art exhibition. She and her husband visited Italy and it influenced her work and created an interest in Tempera. From the mid-1890's she became interested in sacred subjects. They also visited the Netherlands and Hungary. In 1910 she exhibited in Budapest. She died in London in 1927.
