John Richard Clayton - The Crossing

Was a sculptor with Sir Charles Barry but became a draughtsman and wood engraver and was a friend of Rossetti and a member of William Morrris' 'Medieval Society'. Later he was a partner in Clayton & Bell producing stained glass.
John Melhuish Strudwick - Acrasia
The inspiration for this painting is "The Faerie Queene", by Edmund Spenser from the end of the 1500s. The enchantress Acrasia is depicted in the 'Bower of Bliss' surrounded by handmaidens with a knight at her mercy.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti - Study for The Girlhood of Mary Virgin

An important picture. A study for Rossetti's first major oil and the first PRB work to be displayed in 1849 at the Free Exhibition (Hyde Park Corner) and the first time the initials P.R.B. were used. The study shows the Virgin under instruction from her Mother St. Anne. The figure to the right is probably St. Elizabeth.The virgin was modelled on his sister Christina and the older figure on his Mother.
The study is different to the oil. It was done about 1848.
