I realise a smock is just an ordinary working outfit for an artist. But it also has a touch of the bohemian about it, especially when combined with the beard. I am thinking more of Klimt than Rasputin :)
I suspect he saw it as making him a 'man of the people'. Just been reading today that Whistler thought this a conceit and nonsense.
