Edith Martineau belongs to the small group of women artists associated with the
Pre-Raphaelites. She painted in watercolour with a tight detailed and highly
competent style. Her subjects were usually genre or portraits although she also
painted landscape. She exhibited for twenty years at the Royal Academy as well as a
number of other venues including the Grosvenor Gallery. Her sister Gertrude was
also a painter.
