The Briar Maiden

Annie French (1872-1965, Glasgow) - The Briar Maiden

pen, ink and watercolour

Very similar to Jessie M King (one of her primary influences, alongside Aubrey Beardsley and the Pre-Raphaelites), her illustrations are of a fairytale nature, with confetti texture and pastel colours. The women of French’s paintings are childlike, beautiful, graceful and curious with a sexual allure. The girl seems to be mid scene/action.
