Lady Hawarden often photographed her two older daughters in intimate closeness, as here. Such poses had to be held for many seconds and were therefore carefully selected. The daughters are contrasted: one seated, one kneeling; one full face, one in profile; one with dark upper clothing, one with light, and so on. Between them is another sign of intimacy - a small photograph that is clearly by their mother.
