Edward John Poynter - Study for the Cave of the Storm Nymphs
dated l.r.: Aug 10 91
pencil with black and white chalk on buff paper
27 by 23cm.; 10½ by 9in.
Lot Sold. Hammer Price with Buyer's Premium: 5,000 GBP
This drawing was made for the head of the central figure in Poynter's first version of his famous painting The Cave of the Storm Nymphs painted in 1902 (Hermitage Museum in Virginia, with a larger version painted in 1903 in the collection of Lord Lloyd Webber). The date written on the study is problematic as it predates the painting by more than a decade and it is likely that it originally read 'Aug 10 01' and was therefore drawn in the summer of 1901.
