Walter Crane and William de Morgan - Detail from the Arab Hall
Leighton House
Crane and de Morgan worked on this between 1877 and 1881 to match tiles from North Africa and Asia that were damaged in transit. De Morgan worked so hard to achieve perfection that he lost money on the job.
I was so lucky to have visited on my last trip to London. Hardly anyone there, a lovely experience but wish the people working there at the time were more helpful as I had so many questions! Or some kind of audio tour, the details of this home were so astounding.
Leighton House is one of my favorite places in the world!! Thank you for sharing this!!
ReplyDeleteThe detail and sheer craftsmanship is just amazing.

ReplyDeleteJen,
ReplyDeletethat seems a really good idea. The history and features are complicated so it certainly needs interpretation.
