A smaller (9 1/2 x 7 1/4") replica of the artists RA exhibit of 1857.
The subject was suggested to Millais by his friend Sir William Sirling-Maxwell while Millais was staying with him at Keir House, near Dublane, Scotland. The setting is the staircase of Dalhousie Castle, near Edinburgh.
