Frederick Sandys - Spring

1860
pen and ink
Sandys planned to make a series of paintings based around the four seasons. He completed only 'Autumn' and this drawing known as 'Spring'.
'Spring' is probably a portrait of the children of William Houghton Clabburn, the Norwich industrialist who manufactured the famous Norwich shawls. He was one of Sandys' great patrons and the artist painted several portraits of the family.
