Do you by any chance know anything about the background of this painting? It's so atypical for a piece with such a title.

Unfortunately not. Its in the Russell-Cotes museum but has no description or notes.

See Dr C Payne's "John Brett: Pre-Raphaelite Landscape Painter" published 2010 by Yale Univesity Press. Plenty of information on p.96 including colour illustration, and also Catalogue entry #531 on p.212. Painted in 1868, at 5 ft x 8 ft it is Brett's second largest work.
