Dante Gabriel Rossetti: - Before the Battle
1857-8
(retouched 1861-2)
Watercolour
now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
Commissioned for £50 by Charles Eliot Norton. Ruskin disliked it and Rossetti had to retouch it to his satisfaction but Rossetti never considered it one of his best.
