Puerto Rican Museum at Ponce

[School of Nature - Holman Hunt]

I was reading an obituary of Jeremy Maas

http://www.sal.org.uk/obituaries/Obituary%20archive/jeremy-maas

and it reminded me of how in 1963 he paid the then high price of £1000 and failed to sell to a British institution or collector. He went to a South American connoisseur to recoup his money (in fact he doubled it) and the picture still hangs in the Puerto Rican Museum at Ponce, now worth several million pounds.

And investigating the museum website I found this beautiful 1893 Holman Hunt painting that I had never seen before. They also have The Sleep of King Arthur in Avalon which I have featured before, as it went on tour, and The Sleeping Beauty both by Burne Jones.

Lyndhurst Parish Church - St. Michael and All Angels

[the Lord Leighton fresco]

Constructed between 1858-69, the Parish Church was designed by William White, and is well-known for its fresco by Lord Frederick Leighton showing the parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins, with biblical characters said to be modelled on local people.

Fine Pre-Raphaelite windows designed by William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Charles Kempe are also distinctive.

L. Roberts, Arthur Hughes: His Life and Works, Woodbridge, 1997, pp. 170, 304.

Arthur Hughes was first exposed to Pre-Raphaelitism in 1850 when Alexander Munro lent him a copy of the group's journal, The Germ. Soon afterwards Munro introduced him to Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown, and Hughes began his career as one of the most talented of the brotherhood's younger members. During the 1850s and early 1860s he produced some of the most memorable Pre-Raphaelite paintings, including April Love (1855-6; Tate London), The Long Engagement (1854-9; Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery) and Home from Sea (1863; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford). He is also noteworthy as being one of the few who maintained life-long friendships with the movement's founding members.
